Suffolk County Council provides a range of services to people in Suffolk, including social care services, education, libraries, fire and rescue services, trading standards, highways maintenance and waste disposal. It was judged to be a 4-star authority that is improving well in the recent Comprehensive Performance Assessment “direction of travel” assessment.
The county council is the largest employer in Suffolk, and spends over £800 million a year. The council’s main headquarters are at Endeavour House, Ipswich, and it has major centres in the west in Bury St Edmunds and in the north in Lowestoft.
There are 75 councillors, who are elected every four years. The county council is currently under Conservative Party control, and the leader of the council is Cllr Jeremy Pembroke.
