Project Partners - Cefas
The Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (Cefas) is an internationally renowned scientific research and consultancy centre whose purpose is to help its clients to sustainably manage the marine environment. It is one of Europe’s top environmental science centres providing input to many European and international bodies, which have been set up to better understand and manage the complex problems affecting our oceans. Nationally it has been recognised as a strategic partner of government. It provides research, advisory, consultancy and monitoring services to a wide range of UK and international clients in the public and private sector.
It aims to be the prime source of high-quality science used to conserve and enhance the aquatic environment and promote sustainable management of its natural resources.
Cefas is owned by the UK government's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and is a science and consultancy centre, not an administrative body. It earns all of its income from contracts from clients in the UK and overseas, and its successful commercial business.
There is growing international concern to protect the marine environment, which has a crucial role to play in controlling the world’s climate. Cefas is well placed to serve this growing need for its services, and a key reason for the new Campus is the desire to further strengthen Cefas as a centre of excellence in world-class facilities. At the Campus, it is estimated that Cefas will contribute some £30 million to the local economy.
Some 515 employees based at three specialist laboratories within the UK and its own ocean-going research vessel based in Lowestoft. Cefas has had its headquarters in Lowestoft for over 100 years and it is now one of the town’s largest employers.
